Five Guys has become one of the most popular and recognizable fast-food chains in the world, offering a straightforward menu of burgers, fries, and hot dogs. What began as a small family-run operation in Arlington, Virginia, has transformed into a global franchise with over 1,700 locations across the globe. Five Guys’ success story is rooted in simplicity, a commitment to quality, and an unshakable focus on customer experience.

This deep dive into the history of Five Guys uncovers how a modest family business grew into a fast-food empire, the principles that guided its expansion, and how it revolutionized the burger industry with its back-to-basics approach.

    Humble Beginnings: A Family’s Vision (1986-2000)

The Five Guys story began in 1986 when Jerry Murrell and his wife, Janie Murrell, had to make an important decision about their children’s future. At the time, Jerry and Janie encouraged their sons to pursue college, but they also presented them with another option: use their college savings to start a family business. The Murrell brothers chose the latter, and together they opened the first Five Guys restaurant in Arlington, Virginia.

The name “Five Guys” originally referred to Jerry and his four sons: Jim, Matt, Chad, and Ben (a fifth son, Tyler, was born after the chain was established, but the name stuck). From the beginning, the goal was simple—serve high-quality, freshly made burgers in a casual setting. Jerry Murrell wanted to take the concept of fast food and improve on it by focusing on fresh ingredients and perfecting the basics. There were no freezers in the original restaurant, as everything was made fresh daily. This commitment to quality and freshness would later become a hallmark of the brand.

In these early years, Five Guys built a loyal local following in the Washington, D.C. area. The menu was simple: burgers, hot dogs, and fries. However, it was the attention to detail and consistent quality that began to set Five Guys apart. Customers could choose from a variety of toppings, all at no additional charge, allowing each order to feel personalized.

Slow and Steady Expansion: Regional Growth (2000-2003)

For the first 15 years, Five Guys remained a local operation, with just five locations in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. During this time, the Murrell family continued to refine their approach, focusing on customer satisfaction and operational consistency.

Jerry Murrell emphasized word-of-mouth marketing over traditional advertising, relying on satisfied customers to spread the word. This strategy worked remarkably well. As people discovered Five Guys, the demand for more locations grew. By keeping their operations focused and local during the first decade and a half, the Murrell family ensured that the original values of quality and simplicity were never compromised.

The Franchise Explosion: Nationwide Expansion (2003-2010)

The turning point for Five Guys came in 2003 when the Murrell family decided to franchise the brand. Initially hesitant about losing control over quality, the Murrells worked hard to create a franchising model that maintained the same level of care and consistency that had made the original Five Guys a local favorite.

Once franchising began, the demand was overwhelming. By the end of 2004, over 300 locations were in development. In just a few years, Five Guys expanded from a regional chain to a national powerhouse. This rapid growth was driven largely by the brand’s strong reputation and customer loyalty. Unlike many fast-food chains that relied on heavy advertising, Five Guys’ success came from its grassroots support and emphasis on quality over quantity.

ZAGAT Survey, a highly regarded restaurant review platform, played a significant role in the brand’s early expansion. Five Guys consistently ranked highly in categories such as Best Burger, Best French Fries, and Best Value in multiple cities. This reputation as a top-tier burger joint led to further nationwide demand.

The Five Guys Experience: Quality and Simplicity

At the heart of Five Guys’ meteoric rise is its focus on quality ingredients and an uncomplicated menu. The burgers are made from 100% fresh ground beef with no additives or preservatives. The fries are hand-cut from Idaho potatoes, fried in peanut oil, and served in large portions. Unlike many other fast-food chains, Five Guys never introduced a dollar menu or complicated promotional deals. Instead, they opted to keep their offerings straightforward, priding themselves on consistency.

Customization is also a key part of the Five Guys experience. Customers can choose from a wide array of 15 toppings, all included in the price of the burger. This allowed for more than 250,000 possible combinations, creating a personalized experience for each customer.

The Five Guys dining environment also emphasized simplicity. The no-frills, red-and-white decor became a recognizable trademark of the brand. The open kitchen concept, where customers could watch their food being prepared, further added to the transparency and trust in the quality of the food.

    Going Global: International Expansion (2010-Present)

By 2010, the Five Guys phenomenon had swept across the United States, with over 1,000 locations. That same year, the company began to look abroad for further expansion. The first international Five Guys opened in London, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The chain’s focus on fresh ingredients and customizable options resonated with international audiences just as it had in the U.S.

The success in London marked the beginning of a global expansion strategy. In the years that followed, Five Guys opened restaurants in Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. As of 2024, there are over 1,700 locations worldwide, with further expansion plans in the works.

Despite its massive growth, Five Guys has been careful to maintain its core values. The company’s emphasis on fresh, never frozen ingredients, generous portions, and simple yet satisfying food remains unchanged, no matter where a customer is in the world. This has been a key factor in its international success.

The Role of Family in the Business

One of the most unique aspects of Five Guys is its family-run nature. Even as the chain expanded to thousands of locations and became a global brand, the Murrell family continued to be deeply involved in the business. Jerry Murrell and his sons played active roles in decision-making, ensuring that the company’s original ethos was preserved.

The Murrells credit much of Five Guys’ success to their ability to stay focused on what made the business successful in the first place—offering great food and never compromising on quality. Even after franchising, they insisted on keeping the menu simple and resisted the temptation to add more items or cater to fleeting trends.

This familial approach has helped Five Guys maintain its unique identity in a crowded fast-food landscape. By staying true to its roots, the company has cultivated a loyal customer base that values the authenticity and transparency that comes with a family-owned brand.

    Challenges and Adaptations

Like any business, Five Guys has faced challenges. The fast-food industry is notoriously competitive, with giants like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s constantly innovating to capture market share. However, Five Guys has consistently resisted adding trendy items or offering limited-time promotions. This decision has helped the brand maintain its focus and avoid diluting its core offering.

The rise of health-conscious eating trends in recent years also posed a potential threat to Five Guys, given its focus on burgers and fries. However, Five Guys responded by allowing for customization that appeals to a wide range of dietary preferences. Customers can order burgers “bunless” or wrapped in lettuce for a low-carb option, while still enjoying the restaurant’s core offerings.

Another major challenge has been the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted the global restaurant industry. Five Guys, like many fast-casual restaurants, adapted by strengthening its delivery and takeout services, while maintaining its focus on quality. The ability to pivot during this time has allowed Five Guys to continue its operations while many other businesses struggled.

The story of Five Guys is a testament to the power of simplicity, quality, and consistency. From a single family-run burger joint in Virginia to a global fast-food empire, Five Guys has remained true to its founding principles, avoiding shortcuts and focusing on delivering a product that customers love. Their success is proof that, even in a fast-paced, ever-changing industry, the basics—when done right—can create something extraordinary.

Five Guys’ commitment to fresh, quality ingredients, a personalized customer experience, and a strong family presence in the business has ensured its position as one of the most beloved burger chains in the world. As the brand continues to expand globally, it will likely maintain the core values that made it a household name.
